The 144 islands of the bay of islands are a paradise of water-based activities, along with fishing, sailing, diving and swimming. From paihia, the bay's main tourist station, you can go for a cruise on the bay (even swim accompanying dolphins) and visit the celebrated hole in the rock – this is a small island accompanying a hole in it colossal enough for cruise boats to pass straight through.
