Asia Travel - Chilling by Lake Toba, Indonesia
Imagine for a moment: a catastrophic, volcanic eruption of doomsday proportions which left a hole in the ground 60 miles long and 18 miles widespread. Soil, rocks, trees, and ash from as deep as 1,657 feet were thrown into the air in one cataclysmic event. The explosion killed off a immense chunk of the world's habitancy and changed global weather for a millennium.
While this truly wasn't the place to be back then, i am happily sitting careful in the middle point of that caldera now.
The chaos and destruction produced the world's giganticst volcanic basin: basin toba in sumatra, indonesia. A new volcano has risen up from the basin floor to frame samosir island in the center of the basin. The island is a peaceful retreat from the pollution and urban madness of medan -- indonesia's fourth-largest city.
Samosir island is green, peaceful, and the batak habitancy who live here are more than kindly and accommodating. Despite this being the "high" season, there are surprisingly extremely few tourists here. The few tourists who do venture to lake toba are rewarded together with sunshine, blue sky, and the good freshwater swimming everywhere in the world.
What's on the menu? grilled fish caught from the basin only hours earlier, for real. Guesthouses and resorts that line the basin even have diving boards for jumping into the volcanic waters to escape the afternoon heat. Despite the equator being particular a little to my south, the altitude sustains evenings here delightfully pleasant; no fan or air-con needed!
Basin toba still has that remote sumatra feel; there are enough cultural sites dotted around the island and friendly local citizen to preserve travelers occupied for a hardly any days or longer.
I vote for longer -- the opinion of trading this serene basin for a scorching, 15-hour bus ride is enough to originate me...well...start shopping for a part of land.
