Imagine for a moment: a catastrophic, volcanic eruption of doomsday proportions which left a hole in the ground 60 miles long and 18 miles widespread. Samosir island is green, peaceful, and the batak habitancy who live here are more than kindly and accommodating. Despite this being the "high" season, there are surprisingly extremely few tourists here. The few tourists who do venture to lake toba are rewarded together with sunshine, blue sky, and the good freshwater swimming everywhere in the world.

 Basin toba still has that remote sumatra feel; there are enough cultural sites dotted around the island and friendly local citizen to preserve travelers occupied for a hardly any days or longer.

I vote for longer -- the opinion of trading this serene basin for a scorching, 15-hour bus ride is enough to originate me...well...start shopping for a part of land.
